Staying at the Forefront of Change
In “Sonic Boom: Globalization at Mach Speed” author Gregg Easterbrook talks about the remarkable changes in Shenzhen, China. Thirty years ago, it was a seaside village of tarpaper shacks that housed poor fishermen. Today it is a skyscraper-filled metropolis of nine million people. That’s roughly the size of New York City. Its harbor ships more goods than Los Angeles and Long Beach combined. A trailerload of goods leaves Shenzhen’s harbor every second. All this change has happened in far less than an average lifetime. And Easterbrook says that is just one example of the accelerating changes that are going to upend the world as we know it.
